THE OTHER PORTLAND: Art & Ecology in the 5th Quadrant

The Other Portland: Art & Ecology in the 5th Quadrant opens at the
Portland Art Center on January 4, 2007. Responding to the environment
in North Portland, the following artists are doing installations:

Susan Harlan
Fragments: Invisible Territories
Approx: 16’ x 16’
Steel light tables, slides, photos, books

This piece is about the pleasure of beholding Nature, the wonder at
understanding Nature and an inquiry into the reality and meaning of
images, which form the basis of our interaction with Nature and thus
our very essence.

Liz Obert & Mike Suri
Harmony
Approx: 7’ x 2’ x 2’
Cast concrete and steel, video, sound

This installation is an assemblage of images, textures, sounds, and
forms brought together to reflect the industrial and natural interface
of North Portland.

Clare Carpenter
Revival: An Atlas
Approx: 6’ x 5’
Hand-bound artist book, handset type, monoprints, soy-based inks, mylar
stencils, wood, water-based spray paint

A quasi-historical overview of the stretch of Willamette riverfront
from the railroad bridge to Cathedral Park highlighting personal
perspective and evolving ideas of “revival”.

Cecilia Cannon
“I taught the Weeping Willow how to cry …”
Approx: 18” x 18” x 48”
Found glass and metal (some from the Wetlands area), foil, paint on wood

This reminds us of the beauty of the Bybee Wetlands, and the fact that
the work of humans will never equal that of Nature; we must endeavor to
be its guardians.

Peg Butler
Do something. Do Nothing.
Approx:
Plastic containers, water, sand, found detritus, railroad ties

This installation consists of three transparent containers holding
complex and obviously dysfunctional ecological stories.

James Jack
Geo-Circulus
Approx: 5’ diameter
Moss, earth, black paint

This site-specific piece brings the life force of nature into harmony
with the toxicity of our civilization. It is composed of mud samples
from the Columbia Slough and moss from North Portland.

Courtney Frisse
Toxic Migration
Approx: 8’ x 12’
Slide projection, sound

The industrial beauty and hum of a Super Fund site belie the insidious
environmental damage of PCBs leaching into the surrounding migratory
Wetlands.

TJ Norris and Abi Spring
SIM_PK.2
Approx: 8’ x 8’
Plexiglass, water, mixed media

SIM_PK.2 comments on the transformation of what appears to be a toxic
waste dump into a nature park area.

Jedidiah Chavez
Habit(ation)
Approx: 8’ x 9’
Tent, monitor, video

Habit(ation) is a video installation created in cooperation with
residents of North Portland, investigating various forms of habitat.
